Feather Raku

Year:

Feather raku is a unique and distinctive technique within the broader art of raku pottery. In traditional raku firing, pottery pieces are removed from the kiln at peak temperature and placed into containers filled with combustible materials like sawdust or newspaper. The rapid cooling process creates unique crackling patterns and vibrant colors on the pottery's surface.

Feather raku takes this process a step further by incorporating light feathers onto the hot pottery surface immediately after it's removed from the kiln. As the feather comes into contact with the hot pottery, it singes and burns, leaving behind intricate, delicate patterns.

The result is a stunning contrast between the smooth, glazed surface of the pottery and the organic, wispy lines created by the burned feathers. Feather raku pieces often have a rustic, natural aesthetic, and each piece is unique due to the unpredictable nature of the feather patterns. This technique is popular among potters for its striking visual effects and the sense of connection to nature it evokes.
